Director of Development, School of Film & Television
Karen Schwartzman joined University Advancement in 2020. She comes to LMU SFTV with a 25-year track record of achievement in film, media, and entertainment. Through her L.A.-based company Creative Axis International, she’s served as a fundraiser, strategic marketer, and program executive for a range of world-class brands and non-profits, including the Producers Guild of America, Canadian Film Centre, Hong Kong International Film Festival, and many other cinema organizations. Additionally, for the past 13 years, as senior vice president of partnerships for the renowned Telluride Film Festival, she managed the festival’s partnerships with numerous Fortune 500 consumer, entertainment, and media companies, along with prestigious academic institutions and guilds.
Schwartzman is responsible for creating and implementing a comprehensive development program to engage alumni, parents, friends, community members, business and civic leaders to increase philanthropic support and achieve advancement goals for SFTV.
Prior roles include managing director of strategic marketing and special issues for Variety, where she played a key role in growing ad revenue from $18.3 million to $29.5 million. As program director for the Independent Feature Project (IFP), she oversaw the design, development, and execution of a variety of events and programs that educated filmmakers and built audiences for independent films.
She was a doctoral candidate in cinema studies at NYU, earned an M.A. in cinema studies from San Francisco State University and a B.F.A. in photography from the University of San Francisco. In her free time Schwartzman enjoys travel, playing piano and she’s a meditation guide.
